Homeschool, I Recommend

Catch the GODSPELL Fever!

Two months ago, the kids and I would start our day by listening and singing along to the soundtrack of GODSPELL, a fun yet thought-provoking musical based on the gospel of Matthew. During our lesson breaks, we would watch different adaptations via the wonderful world of YouTube. We were also very amused when we found the 1970’s hippie GODSPELL movie. We definitely caught the GODSPELL fever right after Kristo’s Musical Theater class/community staged it as their culminating event.

A month or so after, I came across an article about GODSPELL being staged here in Manila. Since then, the kids, especially our little girl, kept on reminding us that we needed to watch it. Imagine how thrilled we were when we got an invitation to watch  their rehearsal!

On the way to the studio, the kids and I were so giddy. They had so many questions, mostly about what songs they would get to hear. I was giddy because they would get to see some of the country’s top actors up close, performing scenes and songs they love. I was excited to see how this experience would make an impact on them.

True enough, as soon as the kids recognized each song, they smiled and several times I saw their eyes sparkle in awe. What a magical experience for my kiddie winkles!

The all-Filipino cast led by Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Jef Flores (Jesus), and OJ Mariano (Judas) was spectacular. Other cast members include Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, Caisa Borromeo, Poppert Bernadas, Topper Fabregas, Red Concepcion, Abi Sulit, Maronne Cruz, Rhenz Gabalonzo and Gab Pangilinan. I must say, they were all brilliant and impressive and that was just the rehearsal!

The adaptation was superb as well. GODSPELL narrates the parables of Jesus Christ but they’ve managed to contextualize it to make it relevant for the Filipino audience. Through unique storytelling techniques, a hefty dose of comic timing, an eclectic blend of songs ranging in style from pop to vaudeville, Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance, and love come vibrantly to life.

One of the things the kids and I loved most about it was how interactive they’ve made it to be by incorporating a wide variety of games. Sounds intriguing, right?
