Cigarette Stick Candy? Seriously?! What’s up with that?! As Kristo and I walked down the candy aisle at our favorite supermarket, just after we decide to get the “Gummy Mummy” (rather than gummy bears or gummy worms), I saw this:
Yes, it is what it says it is. Cigarette Stick Candy. I have no idea what the makers of this candy was thinking of, and yeah they can claim that it isn’t for kids…but, hhmmm…it’s candy and it’s in the aisle of candies that kids usually check out. Now before anyone jumps on my case for allowing my son to eat candy, don’t worry, he only gets to choose one candy a week, and he’s usually gone for the gummy candies (just like how I was as a kid and perhaps like you too!) 🙂
Back to the main issue. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to act like I’m “holier than thou” — in fact, I was a smoker for ten years! It’s only been two years since I last smoked a cigarette. (How I quit cold turkey is a different story I’d like to tell you soon!) But anyways, do we seriously want our kids to think that smoking is cool? That smoking is just like eating candy? That does sound funny, but remember, these are kids we’re talking about. It would be tough for them to tell the difference between a real cigarette and the ‘candy cigarette’ right? Do they even know what a cigarette stick is?!
I don’t know about you, but as a mother, I am uncomfortable that a candy like this is out in the market right beside candies which are usually for kids. If you really want to market something like this, why not put it where it would tough for kids to see it. And please, don’t make smoking seem like it’s just like eating candy, `coz we all know it’s not…
